We are committed to making a difference to the climate

Since 1877, we’ve been working together to do the right thing, helping our members and community thrive. So it’s only natural we should be committed to building a more responsible and sustainable society in which everyone can benefit.

To achieve this we are investing responsibly and work in partnership with the community to put our key climate commitments in place

Climate change is the challenge that will define our generation.

We’ve been dedicated to taking care of members for nearly 150 years and overcoming challenges throughout our history. The climate crisis affects us all, and at Gravesham Friendly we know our responsibility is wider than the provision of insurance benefits. The choices we make today will help to shape a better future for our members, and the community.

We aim to maximise the positive environmental impact our Society can make across the local community by reducing the direct environmental impact of our operations and investments.

Our climate change strategy has been developed with the assistance of our members and provides an overview of seven objectives we plan to deliver by 2030

Becoming a carbon neutral business

We are committed to becoming a greener business by being environmentally conscious and sustainable.

We are committed to becoming a carbon neutral Society by 2030. We will reduce carbon emissions across our operating activities and property portfolio. Where possible, we will reduce emissions by investing in carbon reducing solutions and adopt a modern way of running the business. If we need to offset our carbon emissions, we will seek solutions closer to home to benefit the community.

Property Portfolio

Evolve our property portfolio to establish a carbon friendly and climate change resilient portfolio.

We will invest in our property portfolio to ensure our tenants enjoy a warm, safe, affordable and climate friendly house they are proud to call home.

Responsible investment

Our members care about making more responsible choices, which is why environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors are included in the investment decisions we make.

We are committed to ensuring our investments contribute to creating a fairer, safer, more sustainable world. We will ensure the Society’s equity and bond portfolio is invested in funds that deliver real action to drive climate solutions.

Membership matters

We are passionate about innovation and providing useful products and financial benefits that help make a positive difference to the lives of members and help them reduce their carbon emissions.

We’ve been helping members since we were formed in 1877. As a mutual Society, there are no shareholders which allows us to pass profits back to members through a range of discretionary benefits. We will continue to listen to our members to offer them a range of market leading grants that add value to their lives.

We won’t compromise our standards and promise to work with partners who are aligned to our climate change commitments.

We understand sustainability is a constant journey of improvement. We will work with companies that share our commitment to become more sustainable, now and in the future.

Working together

We are a Society that cares and will always put our members first. We will continue to talk to members to evolve our climate change strategic plan to ensure this includes your views.

As part of our long and proud tradition of working with members, they have provided valuable input to shape our climate change plan. Our Member Forum, Society meetings and regular communications will ensure we continue to understand and consider members views.

Keeping you informed

We are a purpose-driven mutual, focussed on protecting today and investing in tomorrow. We undertake to produce an annual climate progress report for members.

Our purpose and strategy shapes everything we do; we believe our climate change commitments are linked to our social purpose. We are ambitious and committed to acting on climate change and doing the right thing, helping to build stronger more resilient communities and operating as a sustainable business. We will develop clear measurements and report transparently in an annual report to keep you updated on our how our climate action plan is making a real difference.
